Wednesday was a sad day for the running world. Sally Meyerhoff was killed while on a training ride. She failed to yield and hit a truck at an intersection.

Sally is one of a hand full of elite runners whose blogs I follow. I loved reading about her workouts and her prepping for races. She was the first American to win the R&R Arizona and she just got back from winning the Xterra race in Costa Rica. She LOVED training and racing and it was fun to follow along. While training was serious business you could tell she thought she was the luckiest woman in the world and she truly loved her life. You can check out her blog here.

There’s really not much more to say other than be careful out there and RIP Sally. You will truly be missed.

Haiti Relief

I know you’re probably sick of hearing about it, but it has to be said. This tragedy hits particularly close to home for South Floridians. We have a very large Haitian population. (Thus the reason we have an entire neighborhood called Little Haiti.) Haiti needed an immense amount of  help prior to the earhtquake. They need the help even more now.

I’m not going to get all political on this one…yet.  I will just say that Haiti has repeatedly been done wrong and there is a reason that country is in shambles. It’s not all their fault. They’ve been working very hard to turn things right along with help from a few other nations. From the interview with myone of my  favorite Presidents ever (I really like Jimmy Carter, too), Clinton, it sounds like they had a plan in place to get themselves back on their feet. Then this.

I know you’ve seen the easy ways to give. We’re talking $5-10. That’s as simple as giving up a latte or a drink at the bar this weekend.

Two easy ways for those of us that are lazy:

  • You can text “HAITI” to 90999 to donate $10 to Red Cross relief efforts
  • Text “Yele” to 501501, which will automatically donate $5 to the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund (it will be charged to your cell phone bill).

Two more things.

  1. Be careful what you click on, please. I accidentally clicked on something that was a link with a row of dead Haitian children. The person was being inflammatory and I didn’t know it. I am completely scarred. I did not need to see dead babies. Period. Don’t spread this crap around. These are people.
  2. FUCK YOU PAT ROBERTSON. SERIOUSLY. YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DID.You are pure evil and I question anyone that follows you. I will dance when I hear of your death.

I’m out!

I’m thrilled that the monster that killed Angie Zapata has been convicted of both murder and a hate crime. It beat Angie Zapata to death – after having sex with her – because she’s transgender. He referred to her as “it”. This marks the first time in the country that someone has been convicted of a hate crime for a transgendered person’s murder. You can read more about the case here. I’m saddened that we even need this law, but I’m glad that it’s being taken seriously.

Now, if only we can keep school kids from calling others gay so that  little boys do not kill themselves to escape the relentless abuse.

I think I need a drink.

Good Job Iowa

Wow. A state that I sometimes forget is a state got something right last night. Sen. Obama for the Dems. Good job.

Now, before you start telling me it means nothing, blah blah blah. I understand that. I’m not dumb. I’m more impressed with the fact that a state that is 92% white is open to the idea of a black man. Furthermore, a younger black man. It seems that people are ready to start shaking it up a bit. That makes me happy more than anything.

So, as I was saying…Good Job Iowa.

Good luck, Sen. Obama.

Eight is the New Five

You’re always hearing things like that. Blue is the new black. 30 is the new 20. 40 is the new 30. Blah blah blah. Well now I have one.  Eight is the new five. That’s right, people. Now running 8 miles is just as easy as running 5 miles used to be. Keeping with that, 5 miles is the new 3. Woohoo.

My run last night was amazing. Well…after the first couple of miles. They sucked ass. My legs were tired and it was hot. Really hot. Once I hit the beach, I made myself slow down a bit and relax. Turns out that I was running a bit “fast”. Yeah. Also the beach was pretty much in the shade and there was a nice cool breeze. I stopped thinking about 8 miles and enjoying my run. It was awesome.

The best part was running back towards the house. I was feeling really good and ran up on a lady.  It was a lady that I had seen a couple of times in the neighborhood. Always running in the grass with the WORST pronation that I had ever seen. She was running in a pair of…I don’t know. Aerobic shoes? Anyway, she was pronating like crazy. One day I couldn’t take it anymore and told her she needed to get some real shoes. I didn’t mention what running store I worked in or anything. She tried to do the whole these shoes have been fine for me. Why do I have to have special shoes? Blah blah blah.

Well…last night she stopped me and showed me her new pair of Brooks. And you know what she said? “You were right. I feel so much better. Thanks!” That put a smile on my face and I finished the last mile of my run around 10:30.  Did you read that?  I dropped a 10:30 in my last mile. On an 8 miler!!!!!!

It feels so good to be back to normal. I cannot wait until I start running under 10 for all of my miles. Woohoo!!

This show looks all kinds of awesome. I love pirates. I love Mark Burnett. I love random pirate references. It doesn’t get any better than this.

Also, last nights Survivor? Was so completely full of the awesome that I was squealing with delight.

(Do not judge me!)

So Paula Radcliffe – World Record holder in the marathon – has announced she’s pregnant.
This has me bent out of shape in more ways than one.First of all, she is the fastest female marathon runner ever.  How do you muck that up with pregnancy?
Next, she was supposed to have THE showdown of the century (in my opinion) with my girl Deena Kastor.  They were supposed to go head to head in the NYC marathon. I would’ve paid to see that.  Period. Two of the fastest female marathoners going head to head.  Geesh.

Finally, I just don’t like kids.  If I could even run a 3 hour marathon, I wouldn’t mess that up with kids. I could understand it if she was past her prime, but she still has a few good runs in her.  What the hell was she thinking?

At least with her out of the way, my girl Deena is sure to kick ass.

Go Deena!!!!!

Breast Ironing…WTF??!!

I read an article today about mothers in Cameroon ironing their daughters breasts so they don’t grow.  The thinking is that if the girls don’t have any breasts, they will not be raped.

I don’t think I’ve read anything so sad in quite some time.  I don’t feel the mothers are being rash or anything. Rape is a huge problem in a lot of African countries. Especially since the AIDS epidemic.  Men feel that if they have sex with virgins, they will not catch AIDS.

In theory, that works.  However, instead of going after these men and teaching their sons that rape is wrong, the women are being forced to suffer.  Again.  It’s bad enough that the government has made rape pretty much legal as long as the rapist marries the woman.

These women need to be empowered and taught that this isn’t ok.  Furthermore, rape is NEVER the womans fault. It has nothing to do with how hot a woman looks, how big her breasts are, or what she is wearing.

Ick. I think I’m sick with this. Not regarding the women or mothers. I’m sickened by the men and societies general handling of this. Ick.
