Review: Jillian Michaels Yoga Meltdown

Long before I became an official runner girl, I was a yoga girl. I did yoga for a few years and got in really good shape.  Of course, running took over (I ran in high school, so I missed it!) and I forgot about/could no longer afford yoga. I still know all of the different poses and understand in general the way that it works. For the most part, I like yoga for a good stretch in between my runs and still try to commit to it a few times a week* by doing some free podcasts in the privacy of my own home.

When I ordered How to Cook Everything Vegetarian (review coming this weekend, hopefully), I needed about $5 more to get my free shipping. I started hunting around for Yoga DVD’s and stumbled across Jillian Michael’s Yoga Meltdown. It was only $8.99 so I figured I’d give it a shot. If I hated it, I’d give it to my mom or my sister.

I own 30 Day Shred and think it’s one of the better workout videos out there. I had to stop doing it because it was really hard on my knees. I’ll probably do it again after marathon training when I have the time to find modifications to the workouts.

Here’s a clip of Yoga Meltdown:

First and foremost, this is NOT yoga in the traditional sense. Michaels does some of the poses, but flows through everything or adds movement to it to make it aerobic. There really isn’t much of the spiritual aspect of yoga, either. So overall what did I think?

I really, really liked it. It was a great 30 minute workout that I could barely make it through. I was sweating and working hard.

There are 2 different levels. Easy and hard. (I’m not sure if those are the exact names of the levels.) She starts you off with some warm ups and then moves on to the harder stuff. I knew I was working hard, but this morning my entire stomach area is sore and my arms feel like they’re about to fall off.

My final verdict? If you can get the video for under $10 go for it.

=======

Today’s Run: 4.3 miles | 45:00 | 10:??
This was a hill workout. Since Florida is pancake flat, I went to the gym to do it. This workout almost freaking killed me. It was HARD. Here’s what went down:

2.0 miles @ 22:00 warm up
8 x :60 – :70 @ 6-7.5% incline  w/1:00 – 2:00 recoveries depending on how much I was dying.
.5 mile cool down

My cool down should have been 10 minutes longer, but I just couldn’t run anymore. I was exhausted. I seriously cannot believe how difficult this workout was for me. I was throwing sweat everywhere and even let out a couple of grunts.

Whatever! I have no shame!

* That’s been a whole lot of fail lately!

Great Week So Far!!!

I’m having an awesome week. Lots of cool stuff going on here in GeekGirllandia. (I just make that up. I like it!) I’m feeling good for the most part and overall, I’m super happy. What have I been up to? Let’s see:

SpringAwakening

  • I went to see Spring Awakening last night at the Arsht Center in Miami. It. Was. Awesome. Seriously. I loved everything about it. Basically, it’s a musical about a group of kids in Germany coming of age in the late 1800′s. These kids are super repressed and confused. We get to watch the results. The musical score is basically rock music and there is a real band on the stage. I love the set and the way that most of the actors stayed on stage throughout the show. I also like all of the stomping. (You just have to see it!)  I give this musical 5 GeekGirl stars. Seriously! Go see it.
  • On Wednesday, I also finally won a gift card from Smarty Pig. I’ve been trying to for months. Usually they do a once a month give away for a $100 gift card. This one was for a $25 gift card. Not $100, but woohoo to winning something!
  • I’m trying to put together a small, cost-effective vacation. Due to time constraints and brokeitis, I’m a bit limited. I’ll be going to NY to run the marathon, but that doesn’t really count. I want a little get away in August. I’m working on that.
  • I got some new sports bras. Hopefully these work for me. It’s hard to find sports bras which is really weird since I wear a freaking A cup. It’s not like I need some crazy bra that holds down D cups or some shit. I just want simple compression bras and don’t want to pay $40 for that either. I finally found some Champion bras on sale that might do the trick. I’ll give you a report once I try them out.
  • I also received Advanced Marathoning by Pete Pfitzinger. I’ve read over everything and so far so good. But, I gotta be honest with you. The training looks intense. But, I realized that I have 7 weeks to lay down a higher base. I’m already at 30 miles which Pfitz says is fine. I’m going to go up to 35 and hold it there. I’ll have a LOT more details on this.
  • Somehow I’ve gained a couple of pounds. I’m really not sure how that happened, but it has. (It is that time of the month, so…) This calls for me to react ridiculously. I will go back to counting calories on my iPhone. I’d really like to drop 10 lb for the NY Marathon.
  • School is done diddly doodly. I got a C in Spanish and a B in my Arthurian Literature class. Not as high as I wanted, but I’ll take it. It looks like I have about 6 or so classes left of school. Woohoo.
  • Lots of fun things coming up this weekend. I have a poker party to attend on Saturday. A visit with my mom and sis. (They both got new apartments!) Maybe a movie.

So, that’s what I’ve been up  to. What have you been up to?

============

Workouts thus far:

Monday – 4.32 miles| 45:18 | 10:29 pace
Wednesday – 6.11 miles | 1:02 | 10:12

I meant  to run today, but due to being out late* last night I was too tired. Since I’m not in marathon training right now, I figured it was ok to sleep. I’ve got plenty of days coming that cannot be skipped. I’ll run the next 3 days, though.

Ok. I think that’s it. Off to relax a bit more.

* Note:  Late for me is midnight.

Kick-Ass Review

The Vegan and I went to see Kick-Ass yesterday. While it was nothing to write home about by any means, I found it entertaining and enjoyed it. Oddly, we went to a crappy theater and were 2/3 people that were there. Seriously. A total of 3 people in the theater. We were able to put our feet up and do whatever the fuck we wanted. Yay!

I do think that the movie should have been called “Hit Girl” since she completely stole the show. She was a far more interesting character than Kick-Ass and actually had skills. Nicholas Cage didn’t make me want to punch him in the face, so I suppose that part was a success. The little kid that played Kick-Ass was cute, too.  That McLovin kid was ok as Red Mist. All in all, I liked all of the casting.

Should you drop everything and go see this movie? Hell no. However, if you have a few hours to kill and it’s playing go see it. Preferably in a matinee. You will be entertained. What more can you ask for?

Friday Fun: Parks & Recreation

Once again, I’m late to jump on the bandwagon here. I had read a few things about Parks & Recreation, but since I generally shy away from sitcoms I never bothered to tune in. Plus it looked kind of lame. A couple of weeks ago, I was bored and decided to watch an episode on Hulu. What did I find? A smart, funny show with characters that I don’t hate. Wow. It’s a miracle. I love Amy Poehler and Rashida Jones in it.

******

With that, I’m off to get all girlied up. The Vegan is taking me out to a nice dinner and had flowers sent to the office for me. I’m feeling pretty special right now. :-)

Clinique 3 Steps – 2 Weeks Later

It’s been 2 weeks since I decided that I need to step up my skincare regimen. If you recall I wound up buying the Clinique 3 Step system. I decided to give it 2 weeks to see how it went.

Here’s what Clinique claims the 3 step skin care system can do after 2 weeks:

  • Moisture level of skin is more balanced
  • Skin feels smoother, more resilient
  • Skin looks more radiant as twice-daily exfoliation begins to regulate the natural cell-renewal process

So far all of those are happening. The most interesting thing is that for the first time in years, my skin feels “comfortable”. It doesn’t feel dry or oily. It feels just right. That alone is worth the money. My skin looked clearer for a bit, but I think my allergy/cold thing caused an eczema flair up.  I’ve also read that your skin kind of gets worse before it gets better due to the toxins etc coming out of the skin. I’ve had a couple of breakouts that I didn’t expect. Supposedly this all clears up within 3 weeks, so I’ll see what it looks like after another week. I’ll also hydrate up a bit to help with the flushing.

Final verdict: Clinique is worth the money. Seriously. I can’t believe my skin feels this good. Will I buy it again? You better believe it!

    Friday Fun: What I’m Watching

I’m trying to go back to writing here a bit more. I’d also like to write about things other than running and school. So bare with me while I try a few different things. I love that I have the space and platform to do this.

I generally don’t watch too much tv regularly. I kind of watch whatever when I do turn the tv on. Which is rarely. I can go days without turning it on, but generally will turn it on around 10ish just to relax a bit before bed. I usually watch House, NCIS, or that other show about serial killers. I forget the name of it. Lately, I’ve been catching the shows I actually want to see on Hulu. There are some great shows out there! Who knew? Why don’t I watch them on tv you ask? Because then I’d have to be more organized. That’s not going to happen anytime soon.

Here are some of the shows I’m enjoying:

    1.  Community: I love Joel McHale on The SoupCommunity is funny. I like the premise of the show and all of the characters. Oddly when I first saw the previews for it, I thought that it was going to be really lame. Instead the writing is smart and doesn’t insult me. Yay!

    2.  Modern Family – This is another one that caught me by surprise. I did not think this was going to be funny. At. All. I thought it would be your usual crappy ass sitcom with some loser husband with a hot skinny wife. Instead we got three interesting and diverse families that don’t treat each other like crap. Wow. Go Modern Family!

    3. Glee  - I fought this one for a while. I finally watched a couple of episodes out of pure boredom and now I’m hooked. I like the singing, the dancing, the stupid ass story lines (I wasn’t too happy with the fake pregnancy though), the awesome cameos (Kristin Chenowith, ftmfw!), and Sue Muthafucking Sylvester. Woot!

Honorable mention: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I am getting caught up on this show. I’d watched it a bit before, but love the back episodes. Hooray!
    So…what are you scallywags watching?

C16354_smThis year I’m turning a certain age that I’m not too happy about. Sigh…I’m turning 35. There. I said it. Which makes me really sad. That seems to be the unofficial “Sell By” date for women. Men will run away from me, children will refer to me as the crazy cat woman, and I might as well just give up on being beautiful. Good job society for making women feel this way.

I’ve always been a simple and to the point kind of girl when it comes to beauty. I have super sensitive skin and have battled excema most of my life. Therefore, I’m pretty careful about what I put on my face. Currently, I’ve been using Cetaphil to wash and Neutrogena Sensitve Skin Moisturizer. Nothing spectacular and the results were acceptable. The other day, I noticed that my skin doesn’t really glow or anything like it used to and it’s kind of blotchy looking upon further inspection. This is most likely due to me excema flaring up. Since I’ve never really been happy with my skin care regimen, I decided that it was time to do a bit of research and find some more appropriate products.

Numerous days of researching lead me to Clinique’s Three Step Skin Care. I read that many other excema sufferers found some relief just by actually following this. It’s super simple and to the point. Wash, tone/exfoliate, moisturize. Twice a day. I’m pretty sure that I can handle that. I hurried my little ass over to Macy’s to buy the system. (Macy’s because I had about $15 on a gift card and I have a Macy’s credit card that I try to use once or twice a year to keep it from being closed.) The Clinique guy analyzed my skin and within 10 minutes I was ready to go. (Sidenote: I actually waited 4 days to buy it so I would get my free gift.)

I started using the products on Tuesday and just after 1 day, my skin looks clearer and the texture feels good. I’m going to give it 2 weeks to see how it does, but I might have solved some of my skin woes. At the age of 35. It only took me this long.  Whatever, I’m going to be a hot 35 year old, so I guess it doesn’t really matter.

I’ll report back in a couple of weeks to let you know if it’s still going well. (If not, the Clinique gay said we can try something else. He didn’t give me the mildest toner since I have oily skin and if anything is going to irritate me it’ll be the toner.) Up next, maybe…just maybe, a tinted moisturizer. Whoa.

Alice in Wonderland: A GeekGirl Movie Review

Sunday I went to see Alice in Wonderland at the IMAX. Now, before I begin I have to confess something. I’m totally obsessed with Alice in Wonderland. I’ve watched every version available and just love the story itself.

I was thrilled to hear that Burton and Depp would be teaming up for this project. I wasn’t to thrilled that it was going to be done in 3D. I was afraid that Burton would use 3D to wow us and skip out on the storyline.

    Here’s the trailer:

I’m a bit conflicted here. Overall, I loved the movie. The pacing was great, I LOVED the clothing, and Alice was portrayed as a strong woman that made her own decisions when it came down to what she needs in her life.

I just wish the story would’ve had a bit more depth. Depth how? I don’t know. I just feel like certain things were glossed over in a sense. I think the movie was entertaining, but it left me wanting more. More story, more Alice. More on the queens storyline. This is just because I’m an Alice freak, though.

The thing that I love is how Alice was portrayed. I love that she ditched that loser and didn’t marry him. I also love that she expanded her family business. The feminist bend made me happy.

I give the movie a “B”. I liked it. Hell, I’d even see it again. It was just missing something that I can’t quite put my finger on. If/when I figure it out I’ll let you guys know. With that, I say go see this movie. There are far worse ways to spend an afternoon.

Accidental Find: Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint All Purpose Soap

Last year, I bought a bottle of Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint All Purpose Soap. I bought it with the intention of using it as a body soap. Yeah. Dumbest idea ever. I watered it down as suggested, but when I started to lather up I realized that peppermint on your naughty bits does not feel great. A matter of fact, it will burn and make you cry. Honestly, I should have known better than to use a soap on my naughty bits that can also be used to wash your car.

To get rid of it, I’ve used it as a hand soap. It leaves my hands really dry, and guests complain about it, but I’m a cheap bitch and don’t want to throw it out. (By guests I mean my little sister. She had to go buy emergency hand soap while I was in Peru and she was Giositting. She then told my mom on me…My mom bought me soap thinking I couldn’t afford any. Silly mom.)

Well, I’ve had this weird stain on my counter that keeps reappearing in the grout. It’s really dark and odd. I have no idea what it is, but it seems like I clean it up and it comes back. I think it might be coffee maker related, but I haven’t confirmed. That might be an entirely different post.  When I realized that I didn’t really have anything to handle this weird stain with (I use wet wipes, but they weren’t taking care of this) I decided to give the peppermint soap a try. Imagine my shock when it took care of the weird stain without me even needing to rub it. It. Just. Disappeared.

I then tried it on my icky, dirty sink…It polished the freaking silver. From there, I tried it on the rest of my counters and did wonders. My kitchen is nice and clean with a fresh minty smell to it. Futher, no chemicals!! This might become my new favorite cleaning product. It does everything. Floors, bathrooms, dishes, laundry, cars…the list goes on. It didn’t work for my body but definitely works for everything else. Woohoo for peppermint hippy soap!

The Elegance of the Hedgehog: A Review

    Published on: September 6, 2009

I’ve been reading up a storm lately. Fortunately, most of the books I’ve read have been quite good. When I finished up The Brief Wonderous Life of Oscar Wao, I was ready to delve into something else. I wasn’t quite sure what, so I went to the bookstore and just cruised through to see what jumped out at me. I found The Elegance of the Hedgehog. I bought it because I liked the cover.  It’s not often I go that route, but I couldn’t decide on anything.

Honestly, when I started reading this book I found it a bit boring. I even put it down for a week, but forced myself to come back to it. Boy am I glad I did! It is one of the beset books that I’ve read in years!

It tells the story of concierge Renee Michel and 12 year old Paloma Josse. Renee is a very intelligent woman that is very aware of class struggles. She insists on hiding her intelligence and love for refinment from the tenants in her building. This is what I found very, very frustrating and why I put the book down. I didn’t know that class still mattered to this point. I understand class is still an issue in the US, but I sure as hell don’t understand why someone would hide that they’re intelligent and like Tolstoy.

Though I liked Paloma, I found her to be irritating too. She insists that life isn’t worth living and plans to kill herself on her 13th birthday. I liked her commentary on a lot of things, but I found her insistence that she is so much better and brighter than those around her off putting.

Anyway, the story is told around these 2 characters. The book is heavy on the philosophy of the little things around us and has many chapters that are just thoughts on random things. The book really made me think when it wasn’t making me mad and irritating me. (The author is French, so…) When Kakuro Ozu moves into the building all 3 of their lives are brought together in a nice heartwarming way.

By the end of the book, I understood why everyone behaved the way they did. I also fell in love with this book. It was wonderfully written, with gorgeous words. That’s right, I love the writing itself. Of course this is a translation, so I suppose the person respoonsible for that would be the translator. I thought the prose flowed very nicely. That’s part of why I went back to the book and continued reading. I actually had to pull out my dictionary a few times.

If you have the patience, I highly recommend this book. It will be a little slow at first. However, if you give it a chance it is well worth the ending!
